About Us

Age Concern Luton are a registered charity working for the benefit of older people in Luton.  We were Bradbury Housefounded in November 1994, and have been addressing issues faced by older people from the first day we opened our doors.

Over the following years we introduced our Home Support service, and joined up with a number of older people’s clubs in the town. We worked with these clubs, helping them grow, and improving the range of activities on offer.

From working with older people we noticed that many people had similar problems and unmet needs.  There were lots of lonely older people, no one to help with odd jobs, and a distinct lack of support for people with complicated problems.

Volunteer Receptionist ShirleyTo meet these pressing needs we introduced our Visiting Scheme, Home Repair Service, and Supporting People.  All these services have proved very popular, and have greatly improved many older people’s quality of life.

We receive some funding for these services.  However everything we do is subsidised by the income from our charity shops in Birdsfoot Lane and Farley Hill, our Insurance service, and donations made by the general public.

As the charity grew so did the amount of people needing our services.  We were now helping 1,000 people a week, and our offices, above the charity shop, in Manchester Street were not at all suitable.

For several years the charity was unable to grow until we received a grant from the Bradbury Foundation.  This grant allowed us to purchase 39 King Street, which is now called Bradbury House.

Bradbury House is a three storey building, with a separate two storey annex, in Luton’s town centre.  Bradbury House has given a home to all our services as well as a place in which information and advice can be given in confidence, and where older people can meet and take part in activities.

We are confident that, in Bradbury House, we can continue to provide high quality services, and introduce new projects to improve the quality of life for all of Luton’s older people.
