Social Clubs and Visiting

Age Concern Luton provides, and is involved with, a wide range of activities and projects for older people.  There are a large number of older people who are either lonely, or need a greater variety of activities in their lives.

Picnic in the parkClubs

Age Concern Luton has several lunch clubs, and a number of other clubs currently in Luton.  Our clubs are run by their members, and so each club decides on its own activities.  These include bingo, games, sing-a-longs, or just having a good chat!  Age Concern Luton operates an inclusive policy which means all our clubs are open to all of the town’s older people.  For many members these clubs are the only time they leave their homes and get to talk to other people, and, for that reason, remain absolutely vital.

We also help groups of older people to set up their own clubs, as well as supporting existing organisations in Luton.  We can advise, support, and enable groups to become the kinds of club they want!

The Tea Rooms

Age Concern Luton now operates a drop-in service at the rear of Bradbury House.  Older people, their carers,  and families, can drop by the Tea Rooms, and our courtyard, anytime between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday.  There are occasional activities, though the Tea Rooms are primarily for older people to meet and chat with each other.

Visiting Scheme

Age Concern Luton believes that all older people need some form of company.  Sadly there are a number of  Ladies on a bus lonely older people who do not have anybody, and are unable to attend clubs.  Therefore we offer the Visiting Scheme.  Criminal Records Bureau and reference checked volunteers visit older people for an hour or so each week.

The older person is matched with a volunteer based on interests, life experiences, and other key factors to ensure they have plenty to talk about.  The scheme has proved very popular with many people being less lonely, and many good friendships have been established.

Telephone Club

We also run a telephone club.  Here our volunteers ring older people, usually once a week, to see how they are and have a good chat.  Again this is of great benefit to the older person, and is thoroughly enjoyed by our volunteers.
