Supporting People

What is Supporting People?

Supporting People is the Government's scheme to help people live independently in their own homes.   This is  Woman with cup of tea achieved through practical support, advice, and assistance.  Supporting People is about helping people learn the proper skills so they can eventually look after themselves.  Supporting People does not mean personal care (washing, dressing, etc.), counselling, or having someone to do everything for you.

What is Age Concern Luton’s Supporting People service?

Age Concern Luton offers a floating support service.  This means we come to visit you in your own home, and help you.  This might be helping you set a budget to pay your rent, keeping to your tenancy agreement, or working with you so you can learn the skills to manage your home independently.

Our Support Workers will work with you to introduce the positive changes you want to make to your life.

Man reading newspaperTo qualify for this service you must be over 50, a resident in Luton, and have some independence.  This service is free to eligible people, though you must be willing to have a support plan, and allow us to carry out a needs, and risk, assessment.

Achievements

At any given time around 50 people are benefiting from this service.  We have helped people to manage debt, access benefits and services, move to more suitable accommodation, and stopped people from being evicted.  We work with people until their problems are solved, and they are able to live independently in the community.  Less than 2% of people we’ve helped require our support again!

Supporting People is changing!

We are happy to announce that we are increasing the number of support workers offering this service.  There are a wide range of cultures in Luton, and a growing number of ‘younger’ older people.  For these reasons we feel it is vital that we have a diverse team who can offer multiple solutions to the problems older people face.
