Westminster Abbey Carol Service Part 1

We’re delighted to include a post from our volunteer Michael Fanning below! Part 2 can be found here!

It was on a Wednesday afternoon in late October that I received a very mysterious but intriguing phone call from Age Concern Luton’s Director Colette asking if I might be available to represent ACL at an event in London.

Despite my barrage of questions, I worked out that Colette must be a very good poker player because even though she knew all the details, she gave nothing away

My only requirement at this point was complete secrecy!

Colette informed me that I would be representing all the volunteers and team from Age Concern Luton, and immediately this gave me a huge sense of responsibility, honour and pride.

After 6 weeks of radio silence (but a full security check) I was given details of the event!

The Duchess of Cambridge would be hosting a very special Carol Service in Westminster Abbey to recognise the work carried out by various people and charities from across the UK!

In preparation for the big day I had my hair cut (as well as buying a new overcoat!) in addition to practicing my p’s and q’s!  Despite some rain in the morning the forecast looked good for my trip to Westminster

I arrived at the Abbey via the West Door to the lovely sounds of a school choir and beautifully decorated Christmas trees behind a couple of reindeer!

Just after 4pm a hush descended within the Abbey as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, accompanied by the Dean of Westminster Abbey made their way towards the altar.  Shortly after they walked back up the aisle to specifically chat to some of the children present.

Then, just shy of 5pm we all stood as the service began…
